An AI Mode feature is being tested to replace the “I’m feeling lucky widget” on the homepage. Google confirmed this and said that after posting, the feature will be out for a limited users to identify potential bugs and the scope of improvements.

This AI Mode feature is still being tested directly beneath the Google Search Bar beside the “Google Search Button”.

After this latest tech news was disclosed, a spokesperson from the company said that the feature rolled out last week for some users, where Google rarely brings updates.

The spokesperson also said that the Company tests many experiments with their users of “Labs”, an experimental unit of Google that tests new features for those who choose to be in. Since the testing cannot always be conducted in a wide audience.

The latest feature test reveals that Google is exploring utilizing its most valuable real estate to expose users to its AI technology, as it continues to face competition from rivals in generative AI-driven search.
Since the initial launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, Alphabet investors have raised concerns that OpenAI may damage Google’s search market share by providing consumers with new ways to access information online.

Pushing even further, OpenAI introduced the “ChatGPT search” in October, putting the business in a better position to take on search engines like Google, Microsoft’s Bing, and Perplexity. Microsoft has spent over $14 billion on OpenAI, but its products compete directly with Microsoft’s AI and search technologies, like Copilot and Bing.

Though the company’s flagship AI product, Gemini, has given equivalent or enhanced performance, it is currently working on increasing its user percentage to compete with Google.

You won’t be surprised if we tell you that, as per Google’s recent analysis report revealed during an Antitrust court session in April, Google’s Gemini AI product has 35 million daily active users compared to ChatGPT’s estimated 160 million daily active users.

According to reports, the Alphabet-owned business began exploring home page suggestions internally in 2023. One possible design displayed the home search page offering five unique prompts for potential questions to keep under the main search bar, replacing the current “I’m feeling lucky” bar.

In March, Google announced it would be testing “AI Mode” for selected users; however, the description revealed that the widget would be tested on Google’s results page rather than its home page. In a March statement, the business called it an early experiment in Labs to perform “more advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimodal capabilities so you can get help with even your difficult questions.”
